“Beyond the Page: Where Dinosaurs, Hockey, and Literacy Meet”

By Anna King, Organizational Development Consultant

I recently overheard two Reading Rays tutors talking about how they are learning about hockey and dinosaurs so they can connect on a personal level with several students. They discussed in excited tones how making the connections has a significant positive effect on students’ willingness to engage and learn new reading content, even when it is difficult. I was in awe of their passion and commitment.

This past summer, Reading Rays celebrated its fifth anniversary, a big accomplishment since more than 50 percent of businesses fail within this period. I had an opportunity to interview Reading Rays’ CEO and tutor, Lucinda White, about what stayed and what changed during this period. One of the things that has stayed the same is Reading Rays' commitment to hiring tutors who are passionate about literacy, exceptionally patient and empathetic, see student' strengths and focus on these, and are committed to and fully trained in the Wilson method. Here’s to many more years of increasing literacy for all!
